James McQuaid

James “Jim” Patrick McQuaid, 99, of Keauhou died Feb. 25, 2016, at Nakamaru Hale in Holualoa. Born Oct. 17, 1917, in Darlington, Wis., he was a retired business owner, member and past president of Kona Men’s Golf Club and a World War II Army veteran.

A celebration of life will be held from 1-4 p.m. March 4 at Amici’s Restaurant at Kona Country Club. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a favorite youth golf organization.

He is survived by wife, Mae McQuaid of Keauhou; daughter, Dianne McQuaid of Wellington, Colo.; sons, Michael (Carleen) McQuaid, Patrick McQuaid, all of Woodland Hills, Calif.; five grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.

Joanne Townsend

Joanne Parker Townsend, 90, of Hilo died Feb. 26, 2017. Born Sept. 4, 1926, in Bakersfield, Calif., she was a retired executive secretary.

Visitation will be at 11 a.m. March 4 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with an 11:30 a.m. Mass. A luncheon will follow at Alapai’s Residence. Aloha attire is requested. Condolences may be posted at ballardfamilymortuaries.com.

She is survived by husband, William Townsend; sons, Tim (Lee) Walsh, Michael Walsh; stepson, George (Barbara) Townsend; daughter, Sharon (Robert) Alapai; stepdaughter, Billie Ann Isomura; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren.

Clifford Fernandez

Clifford Fernandez, 71, of Hilo died Feb. 17, 2017. He was a papaya inspector and a retiree from the State of Hawaii.

He is survived by brothers, Calvin (Valerie) Fernandez of Honolulu, Randall (Magdalene) Fernandez of Hawaiian Beaches; several nieces and nephews; two aunts.

Edward Miyashiro

Edward S. Miyashiro, 58, of Hilo died Jan. 16, 2017, at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Hilo, he was employed by the former Puna Sugar Co. and Mauna Loa Mac Nut Corporation.

He is survived by brothers, Alvin (Charlene) Miyashiro, Jay Jyun Miyashiro; sister, Amy (Norman) Kunimura; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Megumi Yugawa

Megumi Yugawa, 91, of Pepeekeo died Feb. 5, 2017, at the Hilo Medical Center. Born in Hakalau, he was a retired mechanic for HT&T, member of the Hilo Coast United Church of Christ in Honomu, Hawaii and a Korean War Army veteran.

Private services held. Family requests no flowers and no monetary gifts.

He is survived by daughter, Thal Critchfield of Seattle; son, Elton Yugawa of Mililani, Oahu; numerous nieces and nephews.

Paul Murcury

Paul Marshall Murcury, 70, of Pahoa died Feb. 22, 2017, at Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home. Born Feb. 5, 1947, in Lawrence, Mass., he was a retired sign maker and U.S. Navy veteran.

He is survived by brother-in-law, Bob Hemple of Florida; numerous nieces and nephews.

Fumiyo Matsuno

Fumiyo Matsuno, 94, of Hilo died Feb. 5, 2017, at the Hilo Medical Center. Born in Hilo, she was a retired sales clerk for the former Stationers Corporation of Hawaii and cashier for the former Sure Save Supermarket.

Private services held. Family requests no flowers and no monetary gifts.

She is survived by sons, Chris Matsuno of St. Louis, Frank Matsuno of Kapaa, Kauai; daughter, Joye Matsuno of Hilo; sister, Miyoko (Noboru) Tanita of Hilo; numerous nieces and nephews.

Midori Yanagawa

Midori Yanagawa, 100, of Hilo died Feb. 17, 2017, at Life Care Center of Hilo. Born in Waimea, Kauai, she was a retired nurse, had also worked for the Robinson family on Kauai, and a former ballroom dance instructor and member of Waimea Senior Center on Kauai and member of West Kauai Hongwanji.

Private services were held.

She is survived by daughters, Dee Kawanishi of Hilo, Vikki (Ross) Higa of Honolulu; sister, Tsuneyo Ikeda of Kaumakani, Kauai; three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.
