Purim Jewish holiday celebration planned

Kona Beth Shalom celebrates the joyous holiday of Purim on Sunday. Festivities begin at 2:30 p.m. at the Hawaiian Queen Coffee Garden, 75-1048 Henry St. The event includes music, dancing, children’s games, home-baked hamantaschen and reading the Megillah, which is the story of how Queen Esther saved Jews of ancient Persia from an evil plot to destroy them.

Everyone is invited to come in costume (especially keiki) and, since sharing food is a Purim tradition, attendees are requested to bring non-perishable food for the Food Basket.

Admission for children is free; adults are asked to make a donation of $10.

Food Addicts in Recovery is a program based on the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. It is a worldwide fellowship of individuals who, through shared experience and mutual support, are recovering from food addiction.

Typically, members have tried multiple solutions to their problems with food, including years of diet or exercise. In Food Addicts in Recovery, members have finally found an answer that works and is long term.

There are no dues, fees or weigh-ins. The group will hold its initial meeting at 5:30 p.m. Monday at the Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity, 77-165 Lako St. in Kona.
