29 arrested for suspected DUI

During the week of Feb. 27 through Sunday, Hawaii Island police arrested 29 motorists for suspected driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents; one was younger than age 21.

Of the 29 arrests on the Big Island, 11 occurred in the Kona District while eight were in Puna and five in South Hilo, according to police. Officers in South Kohala arrested four motorists and Ka’u officers arrested one driver.

So far this year, there have been 239 DUI arrests compared with 200 during the same period last year, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

There have been 230 major accidents so far this year compared with 245 during the same period last year.

So far this year, there have been four fatal crashes on Hawaii Island, resulting in four fatalities, compared with three fatal crashes resulting in four fatalities during the same period last year.
