FOLK book sale Saturday
The Friends of the Libraries, Kona will hold a book sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday on the lanai of the Kailua-Kona Public Library. Proceeds from sales help support the needs of Kona libraries.
Volunteers are welcome and book donations are accepted. A special discount is offered to teachers with ID.

Book discussion Tuesday in Kapaau
North Kohala Public Library’s book group meets at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the library in Kapaau.
The March book selection is “Packing for Mars” by Mary Roach. April’s book selection will be “Man Without a Country” by Kurt Vonnegut. Books clubs are free.

Kona Stories fiction book club meets
Kona Stories hosts a fiction book club discussing “The Dust That Falls from Dreams” by Louis de Bernieres on Tuesday.
The group meets at 6:30 p.m. at the store. Book groups are free if books are purchased at Kona Stories, or a $5 donation is requested.
The novel tells the story of young Rosie McCosh and her three sisters growing up inseparable from their neighbors. When World War I breaks out, their youthful camaraderie is brought to an abrupt end. Some will lose their lives, some their loved ones, some their faith and all of them will lose their innocence. At the center of their stories, always, is Rosie in love with one of her childhood friends and beloved by another facing the collapse of the world she has always known, and the birth of another from its ashes.

Gunberg to introduce new book
The Spa in King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel is hosting Tricia Gunberg for an introduction of her book of “Say Yes to Who You Are to Create Fitness” from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday and March 23 in Kailua-Kona.
Gunberg will introduce her simple-to-follow numerology book and share tips on how to tap into the energy of numbers to create success in life.

Authors to discuss book on kolea
Susan Scott and Oscar “Wally” Johnson will discuss their recently released book, “Hawaii’s Kolea: The Amazing Transpacific Life of the Pacific Golden-Plover” on Thursday at Volcano Art Center. The presentation will run from 7 to 9 p.m. at VAC’s Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village.
As a result of the Kolea’s wintertime presence in human-made spaces, many people become plover watchers who often want to know more about the lively guests that prance in parks, run along roads, and sleep on flat rooftops. Facts about the Pacific Golden-Plover, though, can be hard to find, but Scott and Johnson’s new book provides a new source of information for those who admire the bird.
Scott and Johnson, who have been friends for decades, co-authored the text. Johnson took all the photos and created the illustrations.
Since 1987, Scott has written a weekly column called “Ocean Watch” for the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. Throughout the years, the subject of Hawaii’s Pacific golden-plovers has generated more reader email than all other subjects combined.
Johnson, Ph.D. is the world expert on Pacific golden-plovers. An affiliate research scientist in the Department of Ecology at Montana State University, he became fascinated with plovers while working in the Marshall Islands and has studied them since 1979.
This evening is part of a once-a-month Thursday night series at the Volcano Art Center, focusing on art, Hawaiian culture and our environment. The series is intended to inspire, enhance your appreciation of art and life experience, while fostering community connections. The presentation is free, however donations are welcome.

Award-winning Big Island author to hold writing workshop
Big Island writing teacher and award-winning novelist Tom Peek will host a writing workshop, “Writing for Inner Exploration and Life Reflection,” on March 18 at Volcano Art Center.
Peek’s workshop includes fun, offbeat, and provocative “wild mind” exercises that provide participants with exploration tools to use in class and on one’s own. The workshop is perfect for journal keepers, bloggers, autobiographers, spiritual seekers, memoir and family history writers, and anyone who simply enjoys writing. No previous writing experience is necessary.
Peek has taught his popular workshops since 1991. A writer for more than three decades, his work includes an award-winning novel, newspaper stories and commentaries, university publications, magazine articles, national park exhibits and award-winning video productions.
The workshop is 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and costs $65 for VAC members; $75 for nonmembers.
