Kahakai Elementary tests for gifted and talented

Kahakai Elementary School will be holding Gifted and Talented Testing on April 4. All second-graders will be tested. Parents of Kahakai students may nominate their third- through fifth-graders to participate. If interested, stop by the office to pick up a nomination form.

Taira earns doctorate degree

Derek Taira of Kailua-Kona graduated from from University of Wisconsin-Madison Dec. 18. He earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Policy Studies degree from the college’s School of Education.

Zonta Club of Hilo scholarships available

The Zonta Club of Hilo is accepting applications for its 2017 nursing, math and science scholarships, the Jane M. Klausman Women In Business Scholarship and the 2017 Young Women in Public Affairs Award.

Each scholarship awards $1,000. The Young Women in Public Affairs Award is $500.

The nursing scholarship is open to women enrolled in a nursing degree program at the University of Hawaii at Hilo or at Hawaii Community College.

The math and science scholarship is open to women enrolled full-time at UH-Hilo or Hawaii Community College, working toward a degree in mathematics, physics, engineering, technology, computer science, pharmacy and astronomy.

The Young Women in Public Affairs Award recognizes young women who are committed to volunteering, who demonstrate leadership skills and are dedicated to empowering women and girls. Applicants are asked to reflect on their volunteer work and the problems limiting the advancement of the status of women in their community and worldwide. Applicants must be between age 16 and 19 on April 1 and be residents of Hawaii County.
