Kamehameha Schools presents the 17th annual tribute to Kamehameha III today and Saturday at the Sheraton Kona Resort and Spa at Keauhou Bay.

Festivities kickoff at 10 a.m. today at the birthsite of Lani Kauikeaouli at Keauhou Bay. The event is a special tribute by the Daughters of Hawaii, Royal Order of Kamehameha, and Kamehameha Schools to honor the birth of Kauikeaouli.

From 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. this evening, Kalehua Krug will discuss “Changing Native Hawaiian educational systems through building collective relationships,” touching on pivotal moments in the life and reign of Kamehameha III, in the Hualalai Room of the Sheraton.

And, on Saturday, from 3 to 9 p.m. is the free Aha Mele on the Sheraton’s Hawaii Lawn featuring emcees Jaz and Kaea of KAPA Radio, Ho-a, Casey Olsen, Chadd Paishon, Ohana Krug, Napua Greig, Manu Boyd, Mike Kaawa and Keauhou. There will also be a vendor marketplace with crafts, apparel and local artists. Donations to Project Kuleana will be accepted at the door.

A free shuttle will be available from 2:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Keauhou Shopping Center. Mats and beach chairs welcomed; no coolers. ■
