The Kailua Village Artists are inviting the public to a three-member artists reception this evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at the gallery in the Kona Marketplace.

They are mosaic artist and acrylic painter Kathleen Jaeger, oil and watercolor painter Marilyn Koschella, and chainmaille jeweler Leslie Munger. Light pupus will be served and there will be live entertainment.

Working in mosaic, Jaeger uses primarily stained glass as her tesserae as she creates both wall hung pieces and 3-D work. Other materials, such as beads, chain, or mirror may occasionally work their way into the piece. When she is painting, Jaeger uses vibrant, colorful and playful images. This medium gives her the opportunity to work in a more spontaneous way than is possible with mosaic.

Koschella grew up in Southern California, swimming and spending time at the beach was her favorite past time. This is reflected in her paintings of the ocean. Before purchasing a home in Hawaii in 2008, most of her paintings included lakes and rivers around the Lake Tahoe area. After moving to the Big Island, she has added seascapes of the Kona Coast to her repertoire. Her mediums are oils and watercolors, most of the seascapes she paints are painted on site with the West Hawaii Plein Air painters.

Munger creates chainmaille jewelry. It is an ancient art form that started as armor in Europe in the 13th century, and evolved into jewelry form in the 17th century. Chainmaille is the linking together of tiny metal “jump rings” to form a metal mesh. Each piece of jewelry takes Munger many hours to create and is one of a kind. She uses only argentium sterling silver and gold filled jump rings for her chain maille jewelry.

The Kailua Village Artists Gallery is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
