PTA hosts Earth Day event

The U.S. Army Garrison-Pohakuloa Training Area invites the public to celebrate Earth Day at the base on Thursday.

This free event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and will include 10 stations with multiple hands-on activities, educational displays, informative briefings and live demonstrations.

This year’s event will be highlighted by new additions by community partners, the Blue Planet Foundation and the Pacific International Space Center for Exploration Systems (PISCES) Project, which will exhibit alternative energy options, an interplanetary rover and exciting developments in robotics.

PTA’s Natural Resources team will showcase its management of threatened and endangered species with interactive displays and games. Garden tours will include rare plants.

Visitors must show current photo identification at the main gate. Guests are recommended to bring a lunch. Water will be available.

Merrie Monarch Hawaiian Arts Fair coming up

The Merrie Monarch Hawaiian Arts Fair Cultural Celebration will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium and Butler Building in Hilo.

This annual event features the Hawaiian arts, handcrafts and designer fashions by Hawaii’s master artisans and producers. There will also be Hawaiian cultural demonstrations and workshops and native Hawaiian plants, Hawaiian food and free entertainment.

Auntie’s Angels seeks donations for low-income seniors

Auntie’s Angels – Big Island will hold its monthly Soup Kitchen ‘n’ Pantry on Saturday for the low-income tenants at Hualalai Elderly Housing.

The charity is asking for donations of canned soups plus fresh vegetables and fruits.

Volunteers from Kona Baptist Church will provide lunch.

Donations can be dropped off by calling Auntie Jan at 329-7897.

Beekeeping presentation planned at library

Kailua-Kona Public Library will host a presentation by the Community Seed Library on beekeeping and building natural beehives from 10-11 a.m. Saturday. Ed Fenzl will present the basics of beekeeping, an introduction to the bee decline crisis and he will explain how to support a revival of needed pollinators. The second part of the program will demonstrate the construction of three natural beehives of primarily recycled wood.

Sponsored by Friends of the Libraries, Kona, the program is free to the public but donations are welcome.

Free document shredding

AARP Hawaii and Access Corporation are sponsoring free document shredding and food collection events at Big Island Record and Destruction Center, 73-4164 Huli Koa Drive in Kailua-Kona.

People can drive up and drop off up to two boxes of documents per vehicle from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday. Bring donations of brown rice and canned goods to benefit Hawaii’s hungry families through the Hawaii Food Bank.

Staples and paperclips do not need to be removed. Because of safety and traffic-flow concerns, people will not be allowed to get out of their car and boxes and bags will not be returned. Drop offs will be limited to two bags or boxes per vehicle. Walk-ups will not be allowed.
