The West Hawaii English language learners speech meet drew 120 student competitors from area schools.

The University of Nations, Kealakehe High School, Konawaena High School, Honokaaa High School and their feeder schools all participated. The winner at the high school level was Honokaa, for their dramatic group rendition of Robert Frost’s “The Road Not Taken.” Other pieces presented were Shakespeare’s famous “All the World’s a Stage” by Kealakehe High School, Shel Silverstein’s “All the Places You will Go” by Kealakehe Elementary School, and a persuasive speech from Mo’o Keju of Konawaena High School of “Don’t Take my Language.”

Department of Education Superintendent Art Souza said this is one of his most enjoyable events to attend each year as all the students are given a chance to let their voices be heard.
