Merriman’s Culinary Scholarships offered

Merriman’s Culinary Scholarships is giving $1,000 to up to three full-time graduating high school seniors or students attending Hawaii Community College at Hilo, University of Hawaii Center at West Hawaii, Maui Community College or Kauai Community College who are in need of financial aid. The students must enroll full-time with the food service program.

Anyone interested in applying for Merrimans Culinary Scholarship should see his or her school counselor. Deadline for applications is May 14.

Free dance class offered for Parkinson’s patients

The spring series of Hawaii Dance for Parkinson’s begins with a 1-2:15 p.m. class Wednesday at Hale Halawai.

The class is free and drop-ins are welcome. The class will be taught by Marie Snyder, who is a Wertheimer Fellow of Dance for PD. The class empowers those afflicted with Parkinson’s disease, their partners, their caregivers, and friends to enjoy movement, music and dance.

Insects, arthropods and Mauna Kea discussed

The Office of Maunakea Management, Imiloa Astronomy Center and University of Hawaii at Hilo Department of Physics and Astronomy, continue their monthly scholar-focused presentations at 7 p.m. Thursday at Imiloa Astronomy Center’s Moanahuku Hall.

The free lecture will feature Heather Stever, who will explain the difference between insects and arthropods, and why insects and arthropods are important in Hawaii. Attendees will also learn about the arthropod diversity in the subalpine region of Mauna Kea.

Stever recently earned a Master of Science degree in tropical conservation biology and environmental science from the University of Hawaii at Hilo, completing her thesis on arthropod diversity in Mauna Kea’s subalpine region.

Free movie day for military families

The Hawaii Loa Chapter, National Association of Daughters of the American Revolution and the USO at Pokakuloa Training Area are hosting a movie day to celebrate Month of the Military Child.

A free showing of “Moana’ will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the PokakuloaTraining Area Post Theater. The event is free for all military families and will include popcorn and drinks.
