VFW events planned

VFW Post 12122, behind Kona Locksmith off Kaiwi Street, will host several event this week.

Chicken will be served with salad and a dessert beginning at 5 p.m. Friday. The public is welcome.

The Marine Corps League will hold its monthly meeting on Saturday.

Kona Japanese Civic Association plans festival

The Kona Japanese Civic Association will hold its Annual Festival and Children’s Day Festival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday in the Konawaena High School cafeteria. The event is open to the public.

For adults, admission is $10, which allows attendees to experience a variety of Japanese foods such as okonomiyaki, tai yaki, edamame, Okinawan andagi and more. The Kona Daifukuji Taiko group will perform. Adnission for children ages 3-10 is $5. That fee will cover for food such as hot dogs, shave ice and for activities such as rock climbing, jumping castle, origami making and games.

The Kona Japanese Civic Association is an active civic organization fthat has, or over 50 years, supported the community with activities such as sponsoring student exchange programs, providing scholarships, and sponsoring for the public professional artisans and dancers from Tokyo.

AARP Smart Driver class planned

An AARP Smart Driver class is offered at 1 p.m Monday at the Palisades Recreation Center on lower Kaiminani Drive.

This class is geared toward the older driver. It does not include driving or written tests, only informative quizzes. It covers subjects that may affect drivers as they age, such as hearing, eye sight, reflexes, safety rules, road rage, rules of the road, and problems at intersections.

Participants may receive a discount on their insurance.

Earth Day fair at Palamanui

Hawaii Community College – Palamanui will host an Earth Day fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

There will be displays, a trash sculpture contest, a koa tree giveaway for those who help remove invasive fountain grass and opportunities to see the campus. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own water bottles.

The school is launching a new Associate of Science in Natural Science degree in the fall and faculty will be at the event to talk about the new program and provide tours of the new science labs.

Lecturer Richard Stevens will lead an excursion to plant koa trees. Meet at 9:30 a.m. at the head of the Makahi Trail at the end of Makahi Street with a small digging tool and an extra bottle of water for the tree.

Speakers will discuss topic such as food sustainability, coral reef bleaching, the ahupuaa system and protecting public trust resources.

HAM radio enthusiasts meet

The Kona Amateur Radio Society meets from 2-5 p.m. Sunday at the south end of Wawaloli Beach Park at NELHA. All members, friends, and those interested in amateur (HAM) radio are invited. The group meets on the fourth Sunday of each month.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a dish to share during a healthy faire themed potluck planned in celebration of Earth Day.

Library hosts Solar City representative

In celebration of Earth Day, Friends of the Libraries, Kona will host Elaine Johnson of Solar City from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Saturday.

Johnson will explain how to go solar with clean, affordable solar panels for your home.
