Library talk focuses on improving credit and reducing debt
The Kailua-Kona Library will present a program in celebration of Money Smart Week. Ed Hickey, an AARP representative will share strategies on how to improve credit, and reduce and manage debt. Offered from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesday, the program will also cover how to understand a credit score, how to read and check a credit report. The program is suitable for ages 18 and older.

Keiki story time planned
With the help of the American Association of University Women, Kona Stories Book Store will host a story time for children ages 3-6 years old.
The event is at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the courtyard at Keauhou Shopping Center. Check in at the book store about 10 minutes early, then meet in the courtyard under the tents. The theme is fun with balls.
Space is limited. Make reservations at 324-0350 or KS@konastories.com. There is a $5 participation fee to cover crafts and snacks, but children receive a $5 coupon to use in the bookstore.
Pitch American-made products to be sold at Walmart
Walmart is looking for Hawaii entrepreneurs to pitch their made-in-America products to the company’s buyers in a day-long event at Walmart’s global headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas, on June 28. Registration has begun at walmart-jump.com. The deadline to apply is May 18.
Walmart buyers will be looking to make deals of varying sizes ranging from supplying product to a handful of stores in a local market to supplying hundreds or thousands of stores as well as Sam’s Club locations and Walmart.com.
Grants awarded for digital repository of spoken Hawaiian language
The National Science Foundation and National Endowment for the Humanities have collectively awarded grants totaling $448,464 over a three-year period to fund a project involving multiple University of Hawaii campuses to build a digital online repository of spoken Hawaiian language, or olelo Hawaii.
The project “Building a Hawaiian Spoken Language Repository,” will create a digital corpus of recordings and transcripts of the Native Hawaiian language. It will feature hundreds of hours of audio and video recordings, fully searchable transcripts in olelo Hawaii, catalog information in both English and olelo Hawaii, and a crowd-sourcing feature for soliciting enhanced transcription and content-tagging of the recordings from the public.
The recordings and transcripts will be accessible online at Ulukau: The Hawaiian Electronic Library later this year.
Operation Christmas Child seeks local volunteers
Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan’s Purse, is seeking new, year-round volunteers in Kailua-Kona.
The project collects shoeboxes filled with school supplies, hygiene items and toys and delivers them to children in need around the world.
