Activate focus skills workshop coming up
Have you ever sat in class or at your desk at work and had your mind drift aimlessly after a couple of minutes? Have you ever had an answer to a question, but couldn’t recall the answer? Are there times when you feel you have the answer to a question, but you can’t remember what it is?
Hawaii Community College – Palamanui and the University Center, West Hawaii will host a free and fun workshop entitled “How To Activate Your Focus Skills” taught by Jon Sabati, tech coordinator at Konawaena Middle School. In this workshop, Sabati will cover the challenges we all have with focus, the whys of these challenges and have his Konawaena Middle School students demonstrate the exercises used to increase focus, listening and memory. Attendees can expect to see an increase in active listening and recall skills.
The workshop is 5:30-6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Hawaii Community College – Palamanui and University Center campus in the Panini building, room B-126, 127.

Learn about Snapchat in Waimea
The Big Island chapter of the statewide Social Media Club Hawaii will hold an informal networking session on Snapchat and other forms of social media on Wednesday in Waimea at Red Water Cafe, 65-1299 Kawaihae Road.
Created in 2011, Snapchat is a free mobile messaging application on which people can share photos, texts, and videos. The twist is that the images disappear after a matter of seconds.
Attendees do not need to be experienced Snapchat users to attend, but they should sign up for a free Snapchat account beforehand. A smartphone is not necessary to use Snapchat. The free app can be downloaded to a variety of tablet devices that have camera capabilities.
The event is free but attendees are encouraged to register on Eventbrite.

Introduction to bookkeeping for business owners Thursday
The West Hawaii Small Business Development Center will be presenting a workshop, “Introduction to Bookkeeping for Business Owners,” from 9-10:30 a.m. Thursday at Hale Iako, 73-970 Makako Bay Drive at NELHA.
This workshop is a repeat of January’s sold-out event. It is designed to help business owners become familiar with basic bookkeeping, learn the language of accounting, and help them to make better informed financial decisions for their businesses.
The workshop will be led by Ann Chiodini, CPA, who has extensive experience in business finance and is a former professor of finance and accounting.

Fermented foods workshop planned in Volcano
Jasmine Silverstein of HeartBeet Foods offers a hands-on fermented foods workshop from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday at Volcano Art Center Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village.
Attendees will learn the basics of culturing cabbage and various vegetables into probiotic-rich sauerkraut, as well how to make their own kombucha. Participants will take home their own finished products. All supplies and organic ingredients will be provided. Cooking skills are not necessary.

Recycle Hawaii programs highlight Earth Month
Recycle Hawaii is holding several programs to promote recycling and waste reduction during Earth Month.
The Arts and Crafts of UPCycling Project aims to reduce waste going into the landfill through reuse of unwanted materials. Participants share their original design, assembly, method or technique with a limited use of new materials. Selected entries will appear in a virtual gallery where viewers can vote for the people’s choice award. The contest is open to all ages and groups. Register by Saturday with final entry information and photo due by May 13.
The Keeping It Green Hawaii program recognizes organizations, businesses, schools and agencies for their efforts to address natural resource conservation, green practices and preserving the environmental quality of life in Hawaii. Nominee information should be submitted by May 1.
There will be a backyard composting workshop from 10 a.m. to noon May 6 at Hawaii Green Earth Farm in Waimea. Instructors Samantha Robinson and Noah Dodd will cover basic composting principles and techniques. They will also share information on anaerobic fermentation process or bokashi method. Register by May 3.
