WAILUA (AP) — Authorities say they have found the body of a female hiker who went missing over the weekend on the island of Kauai.

Kauai Fire Chief Robert Westerman says the hiker’s body was found early Sunday in a stream.

Westerman says in a statement that the hiker had been trying to cross the stream Saturday along the Ka’apoko Tunnels Trail with a group of people when she slipped, fell and was swept away.

He says the woman grabbed onto a rock downstream, but when the group hiked to that spot, she was no longer there. After a fruitless search, the group called for help.

Westerman says that after authorities searched for the woman by air Saturday night and Sunday morning, her body was found at 7:04 a.m. in the stream.

Authorities are withholding the woman’s name until her family has been notified.
