Please help deserving students

Hats off and congratulations to Mr. Frederick Herrmann and the Makua Lani Advanced Language Team on their recent success in the international NASA Ames Space Settlement Contest.

Little did this small group of students know about the ultimate outcome of their efforts when they first began this endeavor. They were merely working on a classroom group project. After reviewing their work, Mr. Herrmann suggested they enter the NASA competition. Voila — they won!

Now they have been extended the opportunity to present their work at the International Space Development Conference in St Louis. Such an honor and such an opportunity, but this trip is only three weeks away. Yearend classes, final exams and graduation, etc, stand in the way of this trip. All of these obstacles can be rearranged. But, the cost of about $10,000 is a formidable hurdle. Since time is so short, the scramble begins. The students are planning last minute fundraisers, and requesting donations for their cause. We cannot allow this opportunity to slip by.

We should all take great pride in these students and this top caliber school right here on our island. The national scores of Makua Lani students are far and above other schools in the nation. Under the direction of a superb and professional faculty, this school is becoming an extremely fruitful brain-tank.

Anyone interested in making a tax deductible donation can make their checks payable to Makua Lani Christian Academy — 74-4966 Kealakaa St., Kailua-Kona, HI 96740 or contact the school administration at (808) 329-4898.
