Woodcarving demonstration planned

West Hawaii Woodturners is sponsoring a demonstration of woodcarved enhanced turnings by Dixie Biggs. The event is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the former PacRim Glass building. Cost is $25 for members and visitors. Bring a chair and lunch.

Boater safety class in Keauhou

The Coast Guard Auxiliary will be offering an approved boater safety course at 8 a.m. Saturday near the Keauhou boat ramp. A few of the topics covered in the course are state regulations, federal navigation rules, information about how alcohol usage can hinder boaters, required safety equipment, what to do in a boating emergency, and how to prepare your boat for an outing on the water.

The Auxiliary course is taught in a classroom setting and offers hands-on experience with safety equipment and a written exam at the conclusion of the course. The class takes eight hours and costs $40 which includes all class supplies and lunch.

Space is limited so the first 15 students that pre-pay will be accepted

Wildfire awareness event Saturday

To raise public awareness of wildfires, the local nonprofit Hawaii Wildfire Management Organization will host an event called Party for Wildfire Awareness.

Everyone is invited from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Hale Halawai on Alii Drive.

The party’s theme is “Wildfires Impact Everyone” and will offer free family-friendly activities, highlight natural and cultural resource protection efforts across Hawaii Island, and share simple steps that can be taken around homes, yards, and communities to protect Hawaii’s residents and families from wildfire.

The event will also offer activities such as capoeira, fire truck demonstrations, games, performances and workshops.
