Hands On History schedule announced

Every Wednesday and Friday at 11 a.m., the Kona Historical Society hosts Hands On History at the Kona Coffee Living History Farm in Captain Cook. Hands On History offers opportunity to learn, experience and practice activities important to the daily lives of Kona’s Japanese immigrants and coffee pioneers during the 1920s and 1940s. The program schedule for May is as follows:

• Friday: A Japanese Boy’s Day Tradition: Mochi Making!

• Wednesday: Fresh Off the Press: Making Tofu in the Family Kitchen

• May 12: Backyard Groceries: Sustainability in the Kitchen Garden

• May 17: Home Grown Remedies: Kona’s Tradition of Medicinal Gardening

• May 19: Art and Language: Learning Japanese with Calligraphy

• May 24: Weaving Tools and Treasures: Lauhala on a Kona Coffee Farm

• May 26: Beans in the Skillet: Coffee Roasting at Home

The 5.5-acre Kona Coffee Living History Farm is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays at 82-6199 Mamalahoa Highway in Captain Cook, near mile marker 110. Participation in Hands On History is included in the price of admission.

American Legion meeting planned

The American Legion Kona Post 20 and American Legion Auxiliary will meet on Wednesday at the Kona Elks Lodge, 74-5596 Pawai Place in the Old Kona Industrial Area.

Fellowship and cocktails start at 3:30 p.m. and meeting begins at 4. The meeting will include final planning for the Memorial Day ceremony at the West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery on May 29. Dinner will be served after the meeting. Members who want to have dinner should call Post Commander David Carlson at 325-6491 for a reservation.

Post 20 will also hold the Adopt-A-Highway clean up on May 13. Members will meet at 6 a.m. at the entrance of Pualani Estates at the intersection of Queen Kaahumanu Highway and Puapuaanui Street.

Brain Injury Support group learns about acupuncture

The Brain Injury Support group meets from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Hawaiian Rehab Services, just mauka of Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union on Hualalai Road.

Paul Thompson will discuss the benefits of acupuncture, the assessment and treatment of pain, injury, disease, chronic weakness, allergies and stomach disharmonies through the use of herbs, balms, sterile needling and diet and lifestyle management.

He will also lead the group in a form of gentle Chinese exercise called “Heung Gong” (pronounced Chee-gung).

Kiwanis Club meets

Kiwanis Club of Kailua-Kona will meet at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Makalei Golf Club, 72-3890 Hawaii Belt Road, Kailua-Kona, 325-6625.

All visiting and prospective members are invited. The speakers will be Caleb Kow and Alden Transfiguracion from the Kealekehe High School Key Club.

Kiwanis looks to serve the community by conducting service projects that respond to identified needs, especially related to children.

Kealakehe Neighborhood Watch meeting planned

The Kealakehe Neighborhood Watch will meet at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Kealakehe Intermediate School Cafeteria. The meeting is open to all who are interested in protecting their homes.

Topics of discussion are formation of a Neighborhood Watch and a Jr. Neighborhood Watch. County Councilwoman Karen Eoff and Community Police Officers will be present for feedback.

Meetings will be held on the second Wednesday of each month in the cafeteria.

Learn how to divide cattleyas

The Kona Daifukuji Orchid Club demonstrates how to divide cattleya orchids during its meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Betty Matsuo, one of the club’s original members, will lead the presentation at the Daifukuji Soto Mission Hall. It is open to those interested in orchids. Bring a potluck dish to share.
