Kealakehe Fencing Club host 3rd annual event

The Kealakehe High School fencing club hosted their third annual Mixed Open at the Mountain View Gymnasium on Saturday. The event featured six high school fences as was as 15 total athletes competing between the ages of 11 and 46.

The Mixed Open featured three types of fencing: foil, epee and sabre.

The Kealakehe Fencing Club, which was started four years ago by Joe Zapataoliva, is looking for more athletes with the hopes of getting a couple of more schools on board to enter the BIIF as a verified high school sport. Those student-athletes wishing to take up the sport can contact Zapataoliva at 557-4152.

Cost of lessons is free. Fencers are only required to purchase their own equipment.

EPIC5 Challenge Ultra Triathlon

The EPICS Challenge Ultra Triathlon will take place May 5-9 as athletes attempt to complete five iron distance triathlons in just five days on five Hawaiian Islands

Kauai will launch the event on May 5 at 6 a.m., and each participant will have 15 hours to complete the circuit. A flight to Oahu in the evening will put the athletes in position to start their second day.

On May 7, Molokai will be the stage for the third leg, with Maui to host the fourth day.

The climactic ending will occur on the Big Island, where Kona will greet the athletes on the final day. Here, they’ll wrap up the 703 mile trek, which is expected to go into the wee early hours of the morning.

Athletes competing in this year’s race include: Armando Armellini (Texas), Chad Esker (Wisconsin), Duncan Tebb (Australia), Ignacio Garcia Vaquero (Spain), Juan A. Craveri (Argentina), Laurent Gambotti (France), Melissa Urie (Australia), Michal Šubrt (Czech Republic), Patricio Doucet (Spain) and Tim Sheeper (California)

CrossFit Pohaku to host Double Trouble

CrossFit Pohaku will host the fourth annual Double Trouble team CrossFit competition on May 6.

The event, touted as the largest CrossFit competition on the Big Island, will welcome 132 athletes on 66 teams. The non-profit beneficiary of this year’s event is the West Hawaii Fatherhood Initiative.

HI-PAL hosting boxing event

The Hawaii Police Department’s Community Policing Section – Hawaii Isle Police Activities League announces it’s next boxing event will be held at the Thelma Parker Gymnasium in Kamuela on May 6. Weigh-ins will be from 9 a.m.-10:30 a.m. and the fights will start at 6:00 p.m. The event is free to the public and there will be a concession.

The HI-PAL Boxing Program targets youth ages 8-17, who are interested in an organized, full-contact sport.

“We were overwhelmed with the support of the community from the first event held in North Kohala. We want to continue to provide these events for our keiki and encourage more athletes, coaches and clubs to participate,” said HI-PAL Boxing organizer, Officer KJ Kauahikaua. “It’s great for the kids, and even more so for the boxing spectators.”

BIIF offers free girls basketball clinic

The BIIF will be hosting a free girls basketball clinic for all juniors and seniors at Keaau High School on Tuesday, May 9 from 6- p.m. Registration begins at 5:30 p.m.

The camp will be run by Alison Crumb, who enters her seventh year as the head women’s basketball coach for Peninsula College.

Crumb has qualified for the NWAC Basketball Championships five straight years.

LavaKids Family Fun Runs

On Saturday, May 20th, LavaKids, in partnership with Club Rehab, will host its Family Fun Runs at 7 a.m. on Ane Keohokalole Highway beginning at the West Hawaii Civic Center. Look for the Lavaman flags. This is a free event and open to all ages.

Registration will take place at 7 a.m. followed by a keiki dash at 7:45 a.m. The 1-mile run/walk, 2-mile run/walk and 5k run/walk will begin at 7:55 a.m. This event is open to both keiki and adults. Games and supervision will be provided for keiki during the 5k for parents wanting to participate.

The guest speaker will be Kelsie Wehran, owner of Trunk Trainers, who will talk about the importance of living a healthy and active lifestyle.

Play with a Vet golf tournament

FW Post presents the third annual Play with a Vet golf tournament, which will be held May 20 at the Kona Country Club. Entry fee is $110 to include green fee with cart, lunch at the post and prizes. A shotgun start is set for 8 a.m. and registration opens one hour prior.

The format will be a two-person scramble. All donations will go to help support Veterans families, scholarships, SCUDS, Purple Heart, ROTC cadets and much more.

Free family day at Seaside Tennis Club

The Seaside Tennis Club at Mauna Kea Resort will host a free family day for children and adults on May 27 sponsored by the North Hawaii Tennis Association.

Island tennis coaches and professionals including Hermann Fernandez, Wayne Barnes and Craig Pautler will be on hand for fun on the Seaside Tennis Club’s eleven ocean side courts with games and prizes beginning at 11 a.m. followed by a light lunch, included for participants.

Pre-register by calling the tennis Pro Shop at 882-5420 no later than May 22.

Racquets will be available for complimentary use. Participants should wear appropriate attire and tennis shoes or similar footwear that will not scuff the courts.

Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Nobu Yamauchi Memorial Golf Tournament

The 15 annual Nobu Yamauchi Memorial Golf Tournament will be held on Monday, June 12th at the Hilo Municipal Golf Course. Entry fee is $125 and there will be a 7 p.m. shotgun start.

The format for the tournament will be two-person RBI Crazy Scramble using 30 percent of the team handicap with two putt maximum.

Team net prizes will be awarded randomly. There will also be a special prize for the best team low gross and the best team low net.

The grand prize this year will be awarded to the low net team that finishes in 15th place. This is the 15th year of the Nobu Yamauchi RBI Organization.

Other prizes awarded will be hotel stays at the California Hotel and Casino, Kahala Hotel and Resort ocean view room valued at $955, Grand Wailea Hotel and Resort valued at $699, golf equipment, complimentary golf, restaurant certificates, and much more.

Funds raised will be used for the Nobu Yamauchi RBI Organization and partial scholarship for RBI players who will be attending college.

Male and Female scholarships will be awarded.

HIH College Prep Hoops Camp

Hawaii Island Hoops will hold its annual College Prep Hoops Camp at Kealakehe High School June 19-23.

The overnight camp, led by director Andy Smith, is focused on helping student-athletes improve their skills, while introducing them to a college style program, workouts and training.

College coaches from the NCAA, NAIA and and Junior College level will be attending the camp, which is is $350 for the week. Daily meals will be included in the fee, as well as daily seminars on financial aid and athletic recruitment. There will also be a Hapuna Beach trip.

FilAm Friendship Doubles Tennis Tournament

The 11th annual FilAm Friendship Doubles Tennis Tournament will take place July 15-16 at Holua.

The tournament will host the following formats: regular doubles teams (not team tennis), men’s, women’s, mixed, 6.0, 7.0, 7.5, 8.0, 8.5 and open.

Cost is $35 per player for one event for $60 for two events. Free food and drinks provided to registered players. Registration is not currently open but to be notified of open registration email lovette@gonnalove-it.com. Deadline is July 10 at midnight.

HCC’s Sea-to-Stars race

Hawaii Cycling Club, along with Bike Works, is once again hosting the 48-mile, 9,800 foot elevation climb, Sea-to-Stars bicycle race on Aug. 5.

Cyclists may sign up at usacycling.com for the $70 early-bird price, discounted from the regular $95 fee, until May 31. Discounts are also available for HCC members,students, and the military. The field will be limited to 50 riders.

Registration will be done online only, and will end on Aug. 1. There will be no registration on the day of the race.

Cyclists will sign in between 7-7:30 a.m. at Bike Works Waikoloa Beach and Sports for the 8 a.m. start at Waikoloa Road.
