Kailua-Kona Seniors celebrate Mother’s Day

The Kailua-Kona Seniors will meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 10 at Hale Halawai. Members will participate in a Mother’s Day celebration.

Business Action Center Day planned

The Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs will host a Business Action Center Day from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the County of Hawaii West Hawaii Civic Center, Department of Research and Development on the second floor of Building C above the license bureau.

Walk-ins and appointments are welcome. For an appointment, call 323-4700. Research and Development staff are available for primary business consultations and the DCCA will be available to assist with Hawaii State business registrations, General Excise Tax applications, Federal Employer Identification Numbers and other business filings.

Attendees may also find information on other government requirements pertaining to their industry or business and other resources available to small businesses.

National Federation of the Blind group meets

Don’t let low vision limit life’s pleasures. The West Hawaii Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind meets at 11:30 a.m. every second Friday of the month at Hale Halawai.

This month’s meeting will be Friday, May 12. Two tech savvy folks from the public library will explain eBooks, audio books and music from public libraries using Overdrive and OneClickDigital. They will have applications available for library cards for those who would like to join.

Kona Traffic Safety Committee meets

Kona Traffic Safety Committee meets from 4:30-6 p.m. Thursday to discuss traffic issues with public officials who can make a difference.

Everyone is welcome. The committee meets the second Thursday of each month at West Hawaii Civic Center in the Mayor’s Conference Room on the second floor of Building C above the license bureau.

Caregiver sharing group planned

Hawaii Community Caregiver Network will sponsor a family caregiver sharing group from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday at Regency at Hualalai, 75-18 Hualalai Road.

The group provides a forum for family caregivers to share their stories, seek information about community resources and find support among other caregivers. There will be a discussion on self-care, including the topic of how to reward yourself. There is no charge to attend, however, seating is limited.

Korean War Veterans Association meets

The Korean War Veterans Association of West Hawaii Chapter 279 meets at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Kona Vet Center, 73-4876 Kamanu St., Suite 207, in the Kaloko Industrial Area. There is an elevator for those who need one.

Membership is open to any person who has seen honorable service in any of the Armed Forces of the United States within Korea including territorial waters and airspace at any time Sept. 3, 1945, to the present, or outside of Korea June 25, 1950, to Jan. 31, 1955. Associate members are also welcome.

Last book sale until August

The Friends of the Libraries, Kona will hold its next book sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday on the lanai of the Kailua-Kona Public Library.

Proceeds help support the needs of the Kona libraries. Teachers will receive discounts with their school ID. This is the last sale before a summer hiatus. Sales will resume in August.

As always, volunteers are welcome and book donations are accepted at the library.

Charity Walk planned in Waikoloa

The Hawaii Lodging and Tourism Association will hold its Visitor Industry Charity Walk Saturday with registration at Waikoloa Resort’s Queens’ Marketplace and post-event festivities in the Waikoloa Bowl.

The entry fee for the 5k run and walk for Hawaii Island is $25 for children ages 5-12 and $35 for adults. Runners start at 6:45 a.m. and walkers begin at 7 a.m.

The walk brings together Hawaii Lodging and Tourism Association chapters, member hotels and businesses and other sponsors and is held on six islands, with each county organizing its own walk. In 2016, the walks raised $2 million statewide, including more than $305,000 from Hawaii Island. Hawaii Island’s goal for 2017 is $315,000.

Entertainment, children’s activities, and more than a dozen food stations hosted by member hotel and restaurants will be included.

Local charities that are qualified 501(c)3 non-profit organizations are encouraged to apply for funding. Funds are spent within the Hawaii to benefit residents of the county in which the funds were raised.
