Hiroshima governor to plant tree in Hilo
The Governor of Hiroshima Prefecture, Hidehiko Yuzaki, along with a 14-member contingent, will visit Hawaii Island to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the East Hawaii Hiroshima Kenjin Kai.
As part of the festivities, the county has scheduled a commemorative tree planting ceremony at 9 a.m. Tuesday at Liliuokalani Gardens in Hilo. A black pine has been chosen for the tree planting ceremony.
Yuzaki made his first visit to the Big Island in 2010, soon after he was elected, and last visited the island in 2012. Following his visit to Hilo, the governor will attend the Japan-Hawaii Economic Summit at the Mauna Lani Bay Resort.
County Council Chairwoman Valerie Poindexter, Mayor Harry Kim, and Thomas Goya, president of the East Hawaii Hiroshima Kenjin Kai, will join Yuzaki in the tree planting ceremony.
All council members are invited. Participants are asked to be at the site by 8:30 a.m. ahead of the formal opening of the ceremony at 9 a.m.
Lei making class Saturday
Society for Kona’s Education and Art is offering a lei making class from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday.
Cost is $12 for SKEA members and $15 for nonmembers. Participants are asked to bring some flowers and clippers of they have them.

Lions Club of Kona offers $10,000 grant
The Lions Club of Kona, in partnership with The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, Inc. is seeking to enable a 501(c)(3) community service provider wishing to serve the poor and needy citizens of West Hawaii, with a grant amount of $10,000.
As an integral part of this partnership, an additional benefit will be 100 community service hours donated to this or another, community organization by the Lions Club of Kona members.
The club is interested in supporting initiatives that address the following social concerns: vision or hearing assistance, prevention of homelessness, ailment or disease prevention, domestic violence awareness and prevention, and mental health support.
