One dead, one injured in accident on Highway 190

NORTH KONA – One person is dead and another injured following a traffic accident on Highway 190 at the Daniel K. Inouye Highway junction.

At approximately 7:28 am a military tractor trailer carying a sky jack was heading west on Danie K. Inouye Highway when it lost control and barreled through a guardrail and down the embankment causing the vehicle to roll over according to Hawaii County Police Traffic Enforcement Unit.

The driver of the vehicle was taken to North Hawaii Community Hospital and is listed in stable condition. The passenger was pronounced dead on the scene. Both are assigned to the Army 25th Battalion out of Schofield Barracks in Oahu. Identification of the soldiers is pending notification of next of kin.

In a statement the Army said “Our thoughts and prayers are with the friends and family of these two Soldiers at this difficult time.”

The accident is under investigation.

Highway 190 remains closed.
