HONOLULU (AP) — A chimpanzee is home safe after escaping from its exhibit Sunday at the Honolulu Zoo.

It scaled a wall that separated eight chimps from aviaries before jumping off the wall into a holding area. The chimp could have gone into the aviary walkthrough with zoo visitors, but did not, city spokesman Andrew Pereira said.

It was recaptured within 10 minutes of leaving the exhibit.

“He was on the back wall of the exhibit outside of the security area, he was running around kind of scared,” said Jeremy Hanson, who was at the zoo with his family.

The animal keepers ushered the public away from the surrounding area until the chimpanzee had been put back into its pen.

“I think the zoo handled it professionally and they ushered everybody in, they stayed professional about it,” Hanson said.

All the chimps will be held in their pens until zoo staff can assess the exhibit wall, Pereira said.

A chimp escaped from the exhibit in 2014 as well.
