Hawaii Island police are investigating an apparent drowning this morning in South Kohala.

Authorities responded at 9:37 a.m. to a report that a man, estimated to be in his 60s, was pulled out of Makaiwa Bay in the Kohala Coast resort area.

Lifeguards were already performing CPR when police arrived on the scene. The victim was then taken to North Hawaii Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 10:55 a.m.

The man’s identity will not be released until authorities conclude a next of kin notification. It remains unclear whether the victim was a resident of Hawaii Island or a visitor.

Police have ordered an autopsy to determine the precise cause of death.
