Free boat safety checks offered

Members of Coast Guard Auxiliary Kona Flotilla will be on hand from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday to offer vessel safety checks and pass out safe boating and safe paddling information at Honokohau Small Boat Harbor, near the wash area.

The annual National Safe Boating Week, this year from May 20-26, is sponsored by the National Safe Boating Council and other nationwide safe boating organizations.

The auxiliary is not a law enforcement agency. A safety check makes sure that the vessel has the federal and state required safety equipment on board as well as other safety equipment that is prudent. Some of the required equipment includes life jackets for all those on board, un-expired flares, working navigational lights and a sound producing devise.
