Monk seal talk coming up

The Kona Science Cafe talk, scheduled from 5-7:30 p.m. Monday, will focus on Hawaiian monk seals at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority Gateway Energy Center, 73-4485 Kahilihili St.

The program is part of a monthly pau hana series for people interested in technology in West Hawaii. All are welcome.

A potluck is included with the event. Attendees may bring pupu and nonalcoholic beverages to share. Reusable plates and cups are encouraged.

Speaker Sylvester Orosco is the Hawaiian monk seal response manager and animal care specialist at the Ke Kai Ola facility. He has a degree in marine biology, and has volunteered and worked for Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, since 2004.

There are only about 1,400 Hawaiian monk seals in existence today, with about 300 of them inhabiting the main Hawaiian islands.

Library plans astronomy program

The Friends of the Libraries, Kona will host an astronomy program at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Kailua-Kona Public Library. Keck Observatory astronomer Carlos Alvarez will give a presentation entitled “Are Asteroids the Reason Earth Has Water and Life?”

Alvarez will explain how state-of-the-art astronomical facilities on Mauna Kea are being used to study the chemical composition of asteroids that are likely to be the source of the water in the oceans and the origin of life on Earth.

Free parenting education offered

The Neighborhood Place of Kona will offer a free parenting education course called “How to Talk So Kids Will Listen, and Listen So Kids Will Talk,” which demonstrates effective skills for building relationships with children.

The class is from 9:30-11 a.m. Wednesdays, May 24 to June 28. A certificate of completion is awarded to those who attend and participate in every class.
