Kailua-Kona Seniors meet Wednesday
The Kailua-Kona Seniors will meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hale Halawai.
Members will exercise mind and body by participating in indoor and outdoor games. Members are asked to bring a brown bag lunch. Drinks will be provided.

Ackert earns doctorate
Andrew Kenjiro Ackert, formerly a resident of Kailua-Kona and a 2008 graduate of Kealakehe High School, on May 5 was awarded a Doctorate of Philosophy in Experimental High Energy Physics from Florida State University.
His dissertation for his doctorate, titled “Search for Heavy Stable Charged Particles at sqrt(s)=13 TeV Utilizing a Multivariate Approach,” focused on the utilization of an artificial neural network to search for a new type of fundamental particle, using data obtained from the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, Switzerland.
Ackert has accepted a position in Laurel, Maryland, with the John’s Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory.
Legal Aid Society of Hawaii warns of phone scams
The Legal Aid Society of Hawaii is warning about recent telephone solicitations from people claiming to be part of the Legal Aid Society, Office of the Public Defender, or state courthouse.
In some instances, people are told a case is pending involving a friend or family member and that a monetary payment is required to pursue the case. At other times, the caller may claim to be collecting donations and may leave a toll free number. The caller may even claim to be representing a courthouse. In all instances, the caller will try to collect credit card information over the phone.
Hawaii’s Department of the Attorney General asks anyone who gave money through this phone scam to contact their office at 586-1500.
