VFW schedule announced

VFW Post 12122, behind Kona Locksmith off Kaiwi Street, will host several events this week.

From 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, John Colin will perform his genre variety of music. A $10 donation is requested, which will go toward a new kitchen refrigerator. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend.

Tacos will be served with dessert for $5 starting at 5 p.m. Friday. The public is invited.

Marine Corps League will meet at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

Lions Club of Kona presents scholarships

The Lions Club of Kona presented the following Konawaena High School seniors with scholarships for continued education.

The club presented the Lions Club of Kona, Lion William and Bertha Paris Memorial Scholarship of $1,000 to Leisha Kuulei Sesson.

The Lions Club of Kona Lion Donald Sasaki/ Cal Lona Scholarship of $1,000 was given to Cheyshia Materne.

A Lions Club of Kona $1,000 scholarship was awarded to to Emily Strawn and also to Cody Ranfranz.

Scholarships for community college or other programs for $500 were given to Teizha Kaluna and to Brylee Eliana.

The state’s third oldest Lions Club and its members provide the community support through various projects, events and fundraisers for the club’s projects. The Lions Club of Kona meets at 6:30 p.m. on the third Monday of each month on the second floor of Teshima’s restaurant.

Kona Literacy Center training coming up

Kona Literacy Center provides free, one-to-one tutoring for English speaking adults who are interested in improving their reading and writing skills.

The center is offering a two-day tutor training from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and June 3 at the West Hawaii Civic Center.

Pre-registration is required. The training and manual are free, but volunteers are asked to commit to at least 6 months of service.

Kona Amateur Radio Society meets

The Kona Amateur Radio Society meets from 2-5 p.m. Sunday at the south end of Wawaloli Beach Park at NELHA.

All members, friends, and those interested in amateur (HAM) radio are invited. Attendees are encouraged to bring a dish to share during the Thai themed potluck.
