Degree preparation workshop planned at Palamanui
A degree preparation workshop will be held from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Koali Building (A), room 107 at Hawaii Community College – Palamanui.
Students can learn what degrees are offered in West Hawaii, the necessary steps to move forward, key deadlines, methods of program delivery and what it takes to be a successful distance learning student.

Kona Historical Society lecture planned
Jackie Pualani Johnson, director, actor and retired professor of Theater Arts from the University of Hawaii, Hilo, will present a free historical lecture entitled, “Isabella Rides Again: Isabella Bird &Living History.”
The program will include a performance of excerpts from a one-woman living history play written by Victoria Nalani Kneubuhl for the Kona Historical Society. The event is from 5:30-7 p.m. Wednesday at the West Hawaii Civic Center and is part of Kona Historical Society’s Hanohano O Kona Lecture Series.

Kometani named to dean’s list
Kassandra Kometani has been named to the spring dean’s list at Lewis &Clark College in Portland, Ore.
Kometani is majoring in environmental studies with aspirations to become an environmental lawyer.
She is a member of the Lewis &Clark swim team and secretary of the student athletic council and was named Student Athlete of the Week by the Northwest Conference during the 2016-17 swim season. She is a 2015 graduate of Kohala High School.
Kona resident elected to union board
Peter T. Iriarte has been elected business manager and financial secretary-treasurer of the Operative Plasterers’ and Cement Masons’ International Association, Local 630, and Charles Becerra of Kailua-Kona has been elected a trustee, the union announced.
“Neighbor island input is important to our vision for Local 630,” said Iriarte, whose entire slate of executive board candidates ran unopposed in the recent election. “We believe in inclusiveness, and Charlie will be an important voice in helping to unify and strengthen our organization as we move forward.”
Becerra has been a cement finisher and member of Local 630 for 11 years.
