Life of Amy Greenwell talk planned

Maile Melrose, president of Friends of Amy B. H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden, will present the life of Amy Greenwell, the founder of Kona’s Hawaiian Garden, as well as the history behind the name and an update of the current garden situation.

The talk is from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Kealakekua Public Library.

Hawaii Environmental Education Symposium planned

The Hawaii Environmental Education Alliance is hosting its annual Environmental Education Symposium June 8-10 at the Kilauea Military Camp in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

It’s the first symposium the alliance has held on Hawaii Island. The event brings together formal and informal educators, environmental education practitioners, conservationists and resource managers for three days of learning and networking. It features workshops, concurrent sessions, field experiences and a plenary presentation by Chip Fletcher, chairperson and professor in the Department of Geology and Geophysics, in UH-Manoa’s School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology.

Seniors to attend free movie day

The Kailua-Kona Seniors will attend a free movie day at 10 a.m. Wednesday at West Hawaii Civic Center, Building A.

The event is free and open to all seniors. The musical, romantic drama “La La Land” will be shown.

Kailua-Kona Seniors will not meet at Hale Halawai this week.

Keiki story time planned

With the help of the American Association of University Women, Kona Stories Book Store will host a story time for children ages 3-6 years old. The theme is learning about the sun and moon.

The event is at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Check in 10 minutes early at the book store, then meet in the courtyard of Keauhou Shopping Center under the tents.

There is a $5 participation fee to cover crafts and snack but children receive a $5 coupon to use in the bookstore.

Kona residents make college dean’s list

Kristina Nicole Hamilton and Shannon Alysha Hamilton, both of Kailua-Kona, made the Seattle Pacific University 2017 winter quarter dean’s list.

Students on the dean’s list have completed at least 12 credits and attained a 3.5 or higher grade point average.
