Alzheimer’s Association events planned

The Alzheimer’s Association has four events planned on Friday and Saturday at the Regency at Hualalai, 75-181 Hualalai Road, Kailua-Kona.

Chris Ridley will present “What Is Dementia?” at 6 p.m. Friday. The seminar will include the latest information on the warning signs of dementia. Information on dementia, stages, symptoms and treatments will be provided.

At 9 a.m. Saturday, Ridley will present “Legal Affairs and Dementia.” This presentation will discuss dementia and potential legal needs, legal capacity, advance health care directives, financial planning and organizing legal financial affairs.

The movie “Iris” will be shown at 11 a.m. Saturday The film tells the true story of English novelist Iris Murdoch’s descent into Alzheimer’s disease and the unconditional love of Bayley, her partner of 40 years.

At 1 p.m. Saturday, Ridley will present “Communication and Behaviors in Dementia,” which includes information on why behaviors occur and possible interventions.

All events are free but will have limited seating.

Rep. Evans to address hui

West Hawaii Hui Laulima welcomes Rep. Cindy Evans for a legislative update during its meeting from 10:30 a.m. to noon Friday at The Salvation Army, 75-223 Kalani, Kailua-Kona.

She will also gather concerns and recommendations from West Hawaii service providers.

All social service providers are encouraged to attend. Each provider who wishes to speak will be allowed 3 minutes.

West Hawaii students graduate from OSU

Several West Hawaii students will graduate from Oregon State University at its 148th commencement on Saturday, June 17.

Taylor Kurashige of Holualoa will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in apparel design.

Kailua-Kona students are Melody R. Bristow, Bachelor of Science in kinesiology and Jordan M. Salomon, Bachelor of Science in construction engineering management. From Waimea is Andrew K. Hanano, who will earn a Bachelor of Science in fisheries and wildlife sciences.

National park fee increase Thursday

On Thursday, entrance fees at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park will increase, the last phase of a three-year incremental plan to meet national standards for parks with similar amenities.

The 2017 per-vehicle fee will change from $20 to $25 and the pass is valid for seven days. The per-person fee (the rate bicyclists and pedestrians pay) will increase from $10 to $12, and the motorcycle fee will increase to $20.

The popular annual Tri-Park Pass will increase from $25 to $30 in 2017. The annual Tri-Park Pass is available to all visitors and allows unlimited entry for one year to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park, and Haleakala National Park.

Entrance fees will also increase for commercial tour companies on Thursday.

Numerology basics discussed at library

Friends of the Libraries, Kona will host a one-hour workshop at 3:30 p.m. Saturday with Tricia Gunberg, intuitive healer and author of, “Say Yes to Who You Are to Create Fitness.”

The workshop will cover numerology basics, your life path number and type, frequency, and duration of exercise that fits you best. This program is free.
