Auntie’s Angels and Kona Baptist Church co-hosted an end-of-the-year Field Day/Carnival on Thursday at Hookena Elementary School.

Students and staff enjoyed field games, races, bouncy castles, popcorn, hot dogs, Icees, cotton candy and more. There was also special guests from Big Island Princess Parties.

Large brown bags of food was also passed out to each student, along with free books for their summer reading.

For the past six years, Aunties’s Angels has worked with seniors at the low-income Hualalai Elderly housing complex in Kailua-Kona through monthly programs like the Soup Kitchen and Pantry. Last fall, Jan Benlein said the nonprofit’s board of directors voted to begin working with 128 students at Hookena Elementary School, providing once-a-month brown bags filled with food and creating incentive programs. Among the programs were giving students tickets for attendance to be used to “buy” small gifts, food items, and personal necessities and throwing a pizza party for the readers in the school.

Auntie’s Angels will continue the Brown Bag Program in August. The community can support their efforts by donations of food, gift cards to local stores, fresh produce and donating free books for pre-k through fifth grade.
