VFW schedule announced

VFW Post 12122, behind Kona Locksmith off Kaiwi Street, will host several events this week.

The Activities Committee meets at 10:30 a.m. today.

Pasta will be served with salad and dessert from 5-7 p.m. Friday. Cost is $5 and the public is welcome.

VFW will hold its meeting at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

Low Vision Support Group meets

The Low Vision Support Group meets at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Hale Halawai. Attendees will learn about some of the social services and devices that are available. Members with vision impairment will discuss how they are working through their daily living challenges.

Crusin’ car show to benefit Food Basket Saturday

Big Island classic cars, hot rods and sports cars will converge on Kona’s HPM Building Supply parking lot from 5-9 p.m. Saturday, bringing donations for the Hawaii Island Food Basket and showing off their rides.

The highlight of the event will be 1950s style car hop service by the gals from the Echo City Knockouts roller derby team. They’ll deliver window trays and menus from Kohala Burger and Tacos to cars in the car hop service area of the HPM Building Supply parking lot. Transactions will be cash only.

HPM Building Supply will offer prizes. Participants and spectators dropping off nonperishable food items and cash will get tickets for drawings that will be held every half hour.

The public and all tricked-out cars, trucks and motorcycles are welcome.

American Legion plans meeting, trash pick up

American Legion Kona Post 20 will do the Adopt-A-Highway trash pick up on Saturday. Participants will meet at 6 a.m. at the entrance of Pualani Estates at the intersection of Queen Kaahumanu Highway and Puapuaanui Street.

The Post 20 and American Legion Auxiliary will also hold its monthly meeting June 14 at the Kona Elks Lodge, 74-5596 Pawai Place in Kona’s Old Industrial Area. Fellowship and cocktails start at 3:30 p.m. and the meeting begins at 4.

Charter school is Blue Zones approved

Kua O Ka La New Century Public Charter School is the first charter school and the first K-12 public school in Hawaii to become Blue Zones Project approved.

In addition to its main campus in Puna, Kua O Ka La also services West Hawaii students through its Hipuu blended virtual program with teacher support and projects based in Milolii.

Blue Zones Project is a well-being improvement initiative. Kua O Ka La New Century Public Charter School’s agriculture and culinary arts programs made the school a candidate for Blue Zones Project approval.
