On May 26, a group of 19 students from New Jersey’s Gill St. Bernard School volunteered at the Habitat West Hawaii ReStore. The students were visiting Hawaii to explore Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, and wanted to stop by Habitat for Humanity West Hawaii to make a difference in the place they were visiting.
The high school students arrived at the ReStore in the morning and split up between helping in the ReStore, and helping with the Ulu Wini Community Center. They did everything from cleaning up the shelves, pricing and organizing new donations and helped to garden and clean up the outside area of the community center.
“The young men and women from Gill St. Bernard were a joy to have in our ReStore,” said Assistant Manager Kennocha Berhane. “They helped us out on a very busy day and had no problem handling the workload. It’s always a joy to see young people getting involved with the community.”
The ReStore is the retail portion of Habitat for Humanity West Hawaii’s operations. Donations of new and gently used household items, furniture and building supplies are sold at huge discounts to raise money for Habitat’s many programs and activities in the community. Like most Habitat programs, the ReStore relies on volunteers to help with the day-to-day duties such as unloading, pricing, and organizing the items on the floor, as well as running the cash.
