Big Island police on Friday identified the man killed in a three-vehicle crash Wednesday morning on Highway 19 in Paauilo.

The man was identified as 32-year-old Jacob De Jesus of Paauilo. Two additional people were also injured in the wreck.

The head-on collision occurred near mile marker 37 when a southbound four-door sedan hit a northbound dump truck towing a flat bed trailer.

The sedan, police reported, crossed the centerline and collided head-on with the dump truck shortly after 9 a.m. Wednesday. De Jesus, the driver of the sedan, was ejected from the vehicle and pinned under the flat bed trailer and pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Hawaii Fire Department.

A southbound sport utility vehicle that was following the sedan was also involved in the wreck and sustained minor damage. The driver of the dump truck and two occupants of the SUV suffered minor injuries but refused medical treatment.

De Jesus’ death marks the 20th fatality on Hawaii Island’s public roadways this year. That’s double the number of fatalities at this point in 2016 (10).
