Aloha Quilters of Kona meet

The Aloha Quilters of Kona meet at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the Queen Emma community room at Christ Church Episcopal in Kealakekua.

Aloha Quilters of Kona is composed of quilters working in both traditional and Hawaiian styles. The group meets informally on the third Saturday of each month to share old and new ideas and techniques and to promote the art of quilting. New members, novice quilters or “old hands” are welcome.

Hawaii Tropical Fruit Growers meeting, tour planned

The next meeting of the West Hawaii chapter of Hawaii Tropical Fruit Growers will be from 5-9 p.m. Monday. It will be a joint meeting with the Kona Chapter of Hawaii Farmers Union United.

The 5 p.m. tour of the Hawaii Tropical Fruit Growers repository and Ken Love’s farm will be followed by a potluck. At 7 p.m., members of both groups will discuss utilizing tropical fruit in recipes.

Nonmembers are welcome. All are encouraged to bring recipes, a potluck dish, fruit and plants for sharing.

Meetings are held at 81-6393 Mamalahoa Highway at the Hawaii Tropical Fruit Growers office. The orchard is just makai of the building.

Talk helps women transition into to career or schooling

An upcoming workshop titled “Women in Transition: Moving Forward” can prepare attendees to make a successful life change by going back to school or work.

The event is from 8 a.m. to noon June 24 at Hawaii Community College – Palamanui, 73-4225 Ane Keohokalole Highway, and will feature inspirational speakers, informative and educational breakout sessions, and women’s resources.

Registration is $10 and includes a light breakfast. Deadline to register is Monday. Registration forms and payment must be mailed to: AAUW Kona-Women in Transition P.O. Box 390487, Keauhou, HI 96739.

Learn to lead and groom a horse

Kailua-Kona Public Library hosts an informational program for teens entering sixth through 12th grade on man’s long history of interaction with horses. It is planned from 3-4 p.m. Thursday. Attendees will learn about horses and explore volunteer opportunities to care for or work with them as presented by Therapeutic Horsemanship of Hawaii-Kona.

Calypso and Peaches will be there too and shoes are recommended for those who want to lead or groom the horses. Children under 8 years old must be accompanied by an adult.
