Community-wide garage sale this weekend
A community-wide garage sale is planned from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Villages of Lai Opua Association.
All association members are encouraged to sell their crafts, wares, unwanted appliances, computers, tools, building materials and clothes.
Food sustainability workshop offered in Pahoa
Hooleo Mea Kanu, a workshop on sustainability and food safety and security, will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Hawaii Academy of Arts and Science Public Charter School, 15-1397 Homestead Road in Pahoa.
Information on rapid ohia death, food safety, little fire ants and food preservation will be available. Sen. Russell Ruderman and county councilmember Eileen O’Hara will address sustainability, the Hawaii 2050 plan and state and county initiatives. Sarah Wakana, of University of Hawaii at Hilo will present the concept of the ahupuaa, how it is relevant and the philosophical basis for a sustainable Hawaii. Presenters will also offer information on soil and plants.
The event is free and refreshments will be provided.

Gardening presentation at Kona library
Diana Duff will present ways to create a garden from seeds, cuttings, air layers or grafts at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Kailua-Kona Public Library.
Attendees gain the chance to learn something new or improve their skills. Duff’s “Tropical Gardening” column in the home section of West Hawaii Today on Sunday will cover highlights of the class.
Sponsored by Friends of the Libraries, Kona with the Community Seed Library, the program is free.

Volunteer at Kahaluu Beach
The Kohala Center’s Kahaluu Bay Education Center is seeking volunteers who want to help protect Kahaluu Bay and its coral reefs, fish, and turtles for its ReefTeach program.
A free training session for new volunteers will be held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 28 at the West Hawaii Civic Center, Council Conference Room A.
ReefTeach volunteers teach visitors proper reef etiquette and help them identify fish, turtles, and invertebrates in the bay.
