Learn about hurricane preparedness

Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard will host a telephone town hall at 4 p.m. Monday on hurricane and disaster preparedness.

The congresswoman will be joined by representatives of the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency, Hawaii Island Civil Defense Agency and others. They will answer questions, discuss the forecast for the upcoming hurricane season and discuss preparing emergency kits. Hurricane season is from June 1 to Nov. 30.

Cancer support group meets

A cancer support group meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Teshima’s restaurant in Honalo. The group gathers on the last Tuesday of each month.

Those newly diagnosed with cancer and cancer survivors are welcome, as well as caregivers and family members.

The group meets to share cancer related issues and to lend support to one another. Women are encouraged to learn about breast cancer risks and early detection to help make informed decisions.

Forum on homelessness in West Hawaii slated

Rep. Nicole Lowen will host a forum on homelessness and housing in West Hawaii from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at West Hawaii Civic Center, Council Chambers, Building A. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

The free forum will help residents to learn more about homelessness and housing issues in West Hawaii, and about what is being done by the state, county and nonprofit organizations to address the issues.

Panelists will include Scott Morishige, the State Homeless Coordinator, Lance Niimi and Sharon Hirota from the county of Hawaii’s Office of Housing and Community Development, Brandee Menino from Hope Services, Jeff Gilbreath from Hawaiian Community Assets and Carol Matayoshi from Going Home Hawaii.

There will be time for questions from the audience.

West Hawaii Keiki Coalition meeting planned

West Hawaii Keiki Coalition will discuss Stephen Bavolek’s future training called the Nurturing as a Way of Life. The organization is inviting schools, agencies, families and community members to attend the meeting from noon to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Iwa Arts and Cafe, in Kealakekua next to Strawberry Patch Restaurant.

West Hawaii Keiki Coalition works to encourage nurturing, loving families and communities by promoting the protective factors.

Free yoga workshop held for seniors

Elderly Recreation Services will hold a free senior yoga workshop from 10-11 a.m. Tuesday at Hale Halawai.

The Flexibility After Fifty anti-aging yoga workshop will demonstrate techniques for developing flexibility, range of motion, core strength and inner calmness. All levels of flexibility are welcome. Attendees should wear comfortable clothes. Mats or chairs will be provided.
