Kohala’s historic elements have been captured on a new mural on the post office’s south facing wall. Constructed in May, Kohala High School teacher Fern White coordinated the painting with artist Patrick Ching as a project of the school’s Advancement for Individual Determination (AVID) and College for Every Student (CFES) program. Ching led the Hawi mural’s daily after-school sessions with students, staff, faculty and community members.

Students surveyed the community for input on what should be painted. Bill Shontell of Surety Kohala Corporation was instrumental in providing authentic Kohala Sugar images and permissions in the building according to U.S. post office federal guidelines.
