Macadamia nut conference in Hilo

The Hawaii Macadamia Nut Association will hold its 50th annual Hawaii macadamia growers conference from 4-8 p.m. July 8 at Nani Mau Gardens in Hilo.

This meeting gives opportunity for all macadamia tree growers to meet other farmers, researchers and processors. There will be various speakers from the University of Hawaii, who will give updates on recent insect problems, variety trials, and a range of other topics. There will also be updates on labor laws and supply and federally mandated food safety regulations.

Anyone interested in the macadamia growing, processing, or value adding process are encouraged to attend. Cost to attend is $35, and attendees may also purchase a one-year membership for $50.

Register at www.hawaiimanut.org or pay at the door on Saturday. No membership is required to attend the conference.

Library plans summer programs for keiki, adults

The Kailua-Kona Public Library will host several events in conjunction with the summer reading program.

Battle of the builders is a collaborative challenge that celebrates the power of teamwork and tests creativity and ingenuity. It is suitable for ages 8-11. Reservations for the first 20 children will close on Tuesday. The event is from 3-4 p.m. Wednesday.

Children in grades 6-12 will solve clues and puzzles with others during the breakout escape challenge. Reservations for the first 12 teens will close Wednesday. The event is from 3-4 p.m. Thursday.

Adults are invited to a craft program of making lemon sink scrub, basic cleaner and a sugar scrub. The class is from 10-11 a.m. July 8.

A story circus with Yasu Ishida is planned from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. July 14 for those in preschool to grade 5. Balloon haiku and storytelling with origami and magic are planned. Children will make a magic trick to take home and perform.

The Honolulu rail system will be presented for adults in the traditional Japanese comic theater style of Kyogen from 2-3 p.m. Saturday, July 15.

Programs are free. Young children must be accompanied by an adult.

Hui Laulima meets

West Hawaii Hui Laulima will meet from 10:30 a.m. to noon Friday at The Salvation Army, 75-223 Kalani St., Kailua-Kona.

The hui welcomes Derek Inaba of the division of vocational rehabilitation.

The Hui Laulima (which translates to groups working together) is a consortium of West Hawaii’s major health and human service providers, faith-based groups, community associations, businesses, government and concerned individuals. It was formed to encourage collaboration particularly around matters affecting West Hawaii’s youth and families.

Kailua-Kona Seniors plan beach day

The Kailua-Kona Seniors will meet at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Hale Halawai.

The members will take an outing to Spencer Beach Park. A picnic lunch will be provided and each member is asked to bring a side dish to share. Attendees should bring money for the transportation fee. There is no meeting at Hale Halawai this week.
