Want to hear from mayor on water crisis
Mayor Kim, adequate water supply is a critical need for all communities on the Big Island.
It is obvious that the strategic plan of your Department of Water Supply has failed and that major structural changes are needed to prevent a recurrence of the current critical situation in West Hawaii.
Now is the time for you to take a leadership position and come to West Hawaii to explain to your water customers what the recovery plan is, the major structural changes to be made and the time frame for the current crisis resolution.

Keeping library open takes effort
On Thursday, Mokie Kama complained about the Kealakekua Library now being closed on Saturdays. She blamed the state Department of Education, but the state library system is not connected to the DOE.
If she and many others want their library open on Saturdays again, they should probably get a petition signed by a large percentage of the library’s patrons and take it to the branch manager, who is the one responsible for the library’s schedule most of the time. They would have to close another day during the week, or have two halftime days in order to stay open that day, or hire extra people to work that extra day, which can be very expensive and taxing on the staff, especially when there are only one or two people working in those small libraries, and they have children at home.
There are rules to be followed by the staff, and they must do whatever they can to keep the library open. If Saturdays were slow, then that’s the best day to close it. It’s much better than having to close it permanently, which has happened before.

Management lacking
I can’t believe the water district would have five pumps down without backup systems. Where is the management? Today, we went to Kona Magic Sands Beach and the parking lot is closed and a large section of the beach is also roped off.
Coconuts need to be cut out of the trees. Again, I ask where is the county management? This is a holiday weekend and the beach should be ready for beachgoers. I think it is time management either does its job or gets fired.
