Aloha and Happy Fourth … also know as Independence Day. Hope you plan to celebrate! Every year I remind myself of favorite songs that celebrate our country. So, if you don’t remember the words, just Google the following: “Star Spangle Banner,” “God Bless America” and my favorite, “This Is My Country!” Then hang your flags and enjoy the fireworks, barbecue and friends. We’re having a Red Nose Party!

You know how I love to share history, so try some of these: If you were eating in the 1950s, pasta had not been invented. It was macaroni or spaghetti. Curry was a surname. Taco? Never saw one until I was 15! All chips were plain. Oil was for lubricating, fat was for frying. None of us had ever heard of yogurt. “Kebab” was not even a word, never mind a food. Water came out of the tap … what? The only thing bottled was rum! And to end this, there were three things that were never on the table: elbows, hats and cell phones!

The company where a guy worked provided four-foot-high cubicles so each employee could have some privacy. One day a co-worker had an exasperating phone conversation with her teenage son. After hanging up, she heaved a sigh and said, “No one ever listens to me!” Immediately, several voices from surrounding cubicles called out, ” Yes, yes, we do!”

Last week our police station was broken into and the commode was stolen from their restroom. Yep, here in Honokaa. Yesterday the police reported that the investigation is ongoing but they still have nothing to go on! (Bet you weren’t ready for that one!)

A grandmother overheard her 5-year-old granddaughter “playing wedding.” The wedding vows went like this: “You have the right to remain silent … anything you say may be held against you, and you have the right to have an attorney present. You may now kiss the bride!”

An elderly Carl Reiner was telling someone that most of his “tweets” are one-liners. He remembered one: “Sometimes I worry about having problems with my short-term memory!” Then his next tweet was “Sometimes I worry about having problems with my short-term memory!” Now does that sound familiar to any of you? Us? Ouch!

OK, friends, let’s close with a bit more history and then we’ll say “Aloha!”

I hate it when I see an old person and then realize that we went to high school together! … Some day we old folks will use cursive writing as a secret code! (Yep, Google the word!) … I’ve reached that age where my brain goes from “you probably shouldn’t say that” to “what da heck, let’s see what happens!” … And remember this foh sure: Age is merely the number of years the world has been enjoying you!

Again, Happy Fourth … be safe … be happy, don’t worry! Aloha, a hui hou.
