Franklin Ota

Franklin Atsushi Ota, 67, of Kailua-Kona died June 27, 2017, at Kona Community Hospital. Born Aug. 1, 1949, in Kealakekua, he was a commercial spear fisherman and a Navy veteran.

A celebration of life will be held from noon to 4 p.m. July 7 at Living Stones Church, 76-6224 Alii Drive in Kailua-Kona. The family requests casual attire.

He is survived by his companion, Candida Abril of Pebble Beach, Honaunau; sons, Travis (Shannon) Ota of Kaunakakai, Molokai, and Nicholas Ota of Las Vegas; daughter, Jenelle Ota of Yokosuka, Japan; brothers, Gerald (Karene) Ota of Kailua-Kona, and Newton (Diane) Ota of Carson City, Nev.; sister, Laverne Ota of Kealakekua; four grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Mark Kapahua

Mark Lewin Kapahua, 52, of Hilo died June 23, 2017, at the Hilo Medical Center. Born in Hilo, he was a longtime member of the Glad Tidings Assembly of God where he volunteered at the Glad Tidings soup kitchen.

Friends may call from 10–11 a.m. July 8 at Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church for an 11 a.m. celebration of life. Aloha attire.

He is survived by daughters, Lehua (Kawena) Garcia, Tiffany Kapahua, all of Hilo; brothers, Antone Kapahua of Honolulu, Alva Kapahua Jr. of Hilo; five grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

Leroy Makekau Sr.

Leroy Naahulelua Makekau Sr., 71, of Hilo died June 22, 2017, at his residence. Born in Honolulu, he was a retired iron worker for Iron Workers Union Local 625 and Hawaiian Dredging Construction Co. and a veteran of the Army and Hawaii Army National Guard.

Friends may call from 8:30-10 a.m. July 10 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for a 10 a.m. funeral service. Burial will follow at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2. Casual attire.

He is survived by son, Leroy Makekau Jr. of Oahu; daughter, Roxanne (Kalani) Makekau-Whittaker of Hilo; brother, Michael (Lisa) Makekau of Hilo; sister, Audrey (Alan, Sr.) Meyers of Hilo; three grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.

Frank Ferren Jr.

Frank Albert Ferren Jr., 78, of Kailua-Kona died June 17, 2017, at his residence. Born Dec. 17, 1938, in Boston, he was a general surgeon, obstetrician, and specialized in sports medicine. He competed 19 times in the Hawaii Ironman Championships. He also competed in the Ultraman and Lavaman races, paddled with the Kai O Pua Canoe Club, and a U.S. Air Force veteran.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

He is survived by wife, Annie Ferren of Kailua-Kona; sons, Bradley (Keahi Mills) Ferren of Kailua-Kona, and Gregory (Jenne) Ferren of Honolulu; daughters, Richann Ferren of Kailua-Kona, Noelani (Aaron) Boyd of Hermosa Beach, Calif.; sister, Virginia (Robert) Bowman of Connecticut; six grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Marcus Cannon

Marcus Hayes Cannon, 69, of Naalehu died June 9, 2017. Born May 11, 1948, in Berkeley, Calif., he was a Marine Corps veteran and worked as a carpenter.

He is survived by sons, Ivan (Nikki) Cannon of Yakima, Wash., Sean Cannon of Eugene, Ore., Silas Reiter of Boise, Idaho, Eli Reiter of Pacific City, Ore.; daughter, Ona Johnston of Pacific City, Ore.; brother, William Cannon Jr. of Poulsbo, Wash.; sister, Bebe Cannon of Seymour, Mo.; seven grandchildren.

Norma Salisbury

Norma Louise Salisbury, 92, of Kailua-Kona died June 22, 2017, at her residence. Born April 1, 1925, in Helena, Mont., she was a retired registered nurse and former hula dancer for the late George Naope Hula Halau.

Private service held.

She is survived by son, Kirk Salisbury; daughter, Margo (Eric) Lundstrom; three grandchildren, all of Kailua-Kona.
