Origami class offered

Kona Arts Center is offering a two-hour origami paper card making class at its Keauhou Shopping Center location, next to Jams World from 10 a.m. to noon July 22.

Linda Takai will teach the class where she will use origami paper and muzuhiki cord to make two different cards. Participants will also learn how to emboss. All are invited to attend — no special skills needed. Materials will be provided. Cost of the class is $20 with a materials fee of $10.

9th annual Mango festival downtown

Mango fest is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Hale Halawai. The ninth annual free event in the heart of Kailua-Kona promotes zero waste.

Dr. Tim’s Medicine Band will be performing from 2-3:30 p.m. at Hale Halewai.

Movie night July 14

The movie, “Enough,” featuring comedian Chonda Pierce, will be 7 p.m. July 14 at Kona Faith Center, 81-6224 Mamalahoa Highway. The cost is $8 online, $10 at door.

Puccini’s ‘Suor Angelica’ and Pergolesi’s ‘Stabat Mater’ concerts

Hawaii Performing Arts Festival alumna Peabody Southwell makes her directorial debut in these two works of stunning beauty and timeless themes.

The shows will be at 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Davies Chapel, 65-1692 Kohala Mountain Road. The shows are free but reservations are required. A preconcert lecture is 6 p.m. both days.

A Grand Night in Vienna

The Festival Orchestra features Beethoven’s 2nd Symphony and more. It begins at 7 p.m. Tuesday at HPA, 65-1692 Kohala Mountain Road. The cost is $20

Life Is A Cabaret

Daniel R. Sayre Memorial Foundation hosts benefit at Waikii Ranch

The First Annual Roundup at the Ranch- BBQ &Dance to benefit the Hawaii Island Fire Department and 9 Bravo Volunteer Fire Department will be held at Waikii Ranch on July 15 at the Waikii Ranch Clubhouse.

This event will run from 6-10 p.m. Tickets are $130 per person. Seating is limited to 100 people. Please go to the registration page to book reservations.

The silent auction will start at 6 p.m. and the dinner will start shortly thereafter. Music will be provided by Patio Productions starring Willie-Joe Camara and Damien DeMello. Parking is complimentary

Rendezvous puts on adult show

Waimea Community Theatre presents “Rendezvous,” an exciting variety combination show featuring aerial burlesque, adult one-act plays, and live music.

The adult entertainment at Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu is for ages 16 and older. It will run from 8-10 p.m. July 14-15. The Kahilu Theatre show will be 8 p.m. July 29.

‘Don Giovanni’ by Mozart on stage

Experience Mozart’s brilliant opera, based on the story of the libertine Don Juan, and the consequences of his selfishness and lust. Complete theatrically staged opera with full orchestra.

It will be at 4 p.m. July 16 at Kahilu Theatre. Tickets cost between $20-$40. It is sponsored by Andrew Czajkowski and the Hawaii Performing Arts Festival.

The Mikado by Gilbert &Sullivan

Gilbert &Sullivan’s 1885 comic romp pokes fun at British politics and politicians, thinly disguised as Japanese. Complete theatrically staged opera with full orchestra. Directed by Justin John Moniz.

Family film nights at North Kohala Public Library, Kapaau

Story circus celebrates summer reading

Prepare to be amazed, dazzled and bewildered by Story Circus with Yasu Ishida – an exciting storytelling show where stories meet circus.

Can you imagine what balloon haiku (balloon animals coming to life with haiku), storygami (storytelling with origami), and storytelling with magic look like? Stories will come together in visual ways, inviting audience interaction and lots of fun. After the stories, children get to make a simple magic trick that they can take home to perform. This 45-minute program is suitable for children in preschool to grade 5.

Paint-a-bookend

The event will be from 3:30- 5:30 p.m. July 13 at Honokaa Public Library.

Paint one of the library bookends and your art will become part of the library. Easy enough for small hands, and fun for parents, too. All supplies are generously provided by our Friends of the Libraries of Hawaii. Drop in (come when you can, leave when you’re ready) between 3:30 and 5:30 pm.

Abled Hawaii Artists 10th Annual Art Festival

Hawaii County Mayor Harry Kim declared July 22 Abled Hawaii Artists (AHA) Day in Hawaii County.

Held at the Prince Kuhio Plaza in Hilo on July 22, the celebration marking the occasion will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

AHA promotes disability awareness and pride by celebrating individual abilities rather than disabilities, while promoting employment in the arts. AHA is the largest celebration of the Americans with Disabilities Act in the state and is a completely free, not-for-profit, meaningful community event that brings together more than 400 participants for a day of music, performing arts, visual arts, healing arts, hands on demonstrations, and more.

This free event also incorporates speeches by disability self advocates and important community leaders. Enjoy healing arts demonstrations, express the artist in you with face/body painting, chalk and recycled art, mask and puppet making- fun for the entire ohana.

Renowned visiting artist Tomoko Nakazato at DMC

The Donkey Mill Art Center welcomes celebrated international ceramicist Tomoko Nakazato, who will lead ceramics workshops exploring a theme of storytelling and community engagement.

Tomoko Nakazato arrived on the Big Island this month from California. She is a featured visiting artist currently engaging keiki and teens at Donkey Mill’s annual Summer Art Experience and is scheduled to teach ceramics workshops suitable for teens and adults of all abilities through July.

Tomoko Nakazato narrates the contemporary tales of human experiences through her animated ceramic sculptures and drawings. Known for her creative creatures, Tomoko will be leading Peculiar Creatures, a weekend workshop that will explore the art of storytelling by creating clay creature sculptures.

Nakazato grew up in Tokyo, Japan, and moved to San Francisco.
