Cat lovers thankful for it all

I would like to take the opportunity to thank the organizers, community, visitors and participants of the Fourth of July Parade. There are always new things to see and people to meet and hear about. I would also like to thank the community for the continuing support of the parade and, especially, the positive feedback for AdvoCats.

We are proud of the work we do and the difference 19,631 cats spayed and neutered makes is visible. If people have an area where ferals are a problem, get in touch with us and we can help with traps. We do the spay/neuter at no cost for ferals. There is a limited amount of us and that is why we ask you to trap. Thank you for your continued support.

Open letter to good writers

When I’m at home in Hawaii, whether on Oahu or in Kona, my favorite pastime is to read both the West Hawaii Today and the Star-Advertiser. I thoroughly enjoy the editorial section in both papers — the opinion page; letters, Your Voice; My Turn, and so forth.

I would just like to comment on some outstanding letters that were published recently (and there have been many in the past): “Judicial system too soft on hard crimes,” for example, by Jeannie Scambos (WHT, July 6); “Water blame sometimes misdirected,” Andy Levin (WHT, July 6); “More tourists? Resources stretched thin already,” by Dan Sabo (WHT, July 5).

You are all such good writers and, more than likely, outstanding Big Island citizens. Why not consider running for county or state offices? We really need people who can drain the swamp in this beautiful state. If you decide to do so, count me in. I’ll help in your campaign!

Doc a tough act to follow

Dr. Frank Ferren was probably the last of the country doctors. Never sent anyone away.

Some patients brought vegetables, fruit, fish and smoked meat as payment that was always welcomed and appreciated by the Ferrens.

Dr. Ferren’s patients were friends and always welcomed. Always had time to talk story and get to know people. Always there to help.

May he rest in peace, but we know he’s running, swimming and biking in the heavenly skies.

Mahalo and God bless the Ferren ohana, thanks for sharing him with Kona.
