Library celebrates end of Summer Reading Program
Kealakekua Public Library will celebrate the finale of the Summer Reading Program from 1 to 4 p.m. on Monday.
The celebration begins with cake and giveaways. A prize drawing will take place at 3 p.m. featuring more than 15 prizes donated by eight local businesses including a gift certificate for two on Captain Zodiac’s Wild Dolphin Swim, among others.
To win a prize, attendees must be registered online with the Summer Reading Program, have read and logged at least 1,000 minutes throughout the summer, and be registered with the Kealakekua Public Library branch for the program. Winners do not need to be present, however, those who attend the event and win will get to choose their prize. Winners who are not present will be notified after the celebration.

FOLK Book Club meets Tuesday
Friends of the Libraries, Kona Book Club meets at 11 a.m. Tuesday on the Kailua-Kona Public Library lanai.
This month’s selection is “Madam Secretary: A Memoir” by Madeline Albright.
“Madam Secretary” is a riveting account of the life of America’s first female secretary of state, Madeleine Albright. One of the most admired women in U.S. history reflects on her remarkable personal story, and her career as a high-level participant in some of the most dramatic events of our time.
The book club next meets in August to discuss “Honor Killing” by David Stannard.

‘Curve of the Hook’ receives award
The Hawaii Book Publishers Association recently presented its 2017 Ka Palapala Po’okela Award for excellence in nonfiction to “Curve of the Hook: An Archaeologist in Polynesia,” the summer 2016 volume of “Manoa: A Pacific Journal of International Writing,” published by the University of Hawaii Press.
Now in its 23rd year, the awards are presented by Hawaii Book Publishers Association to honor Hawaii’s finest books and their authors, illustrators, photographers, designers, and publishers. “Curve of the Hook: An Archaeologist in Polynesia” was among 85 nominations in 12 publishing categories that were considered by the association’s jurors
In a book-length interview, illustrated with maps, charts, and previously unpublished photographs, “Curve of the Hook” covers the life, career, and major achievements of Yosihiko Sinoto, former chair of the anthropology department at the Bishop Museum and one of the foremost archaeologists in the Pacific. Sinoto is also a University of Hawaii alumnus.
The book was edited by Manoa’s editor, Frank Stewart, who translated “Curve of the Hook” from Japanese with Madoka Nagado, a Ph.D. candidate in the UH Manoa English department.
The association also awarded the following:
– “Facing the Spears of Change: The Life and Legacy of John Papa Ii” by Marie Alohalani Brown for Excellence in Hawaiian Language, Culture and History.
– “Royal Hawaiian Featherwork: Na Hulu Alii” by Leah Caldeira, Christina Hellmich, Adrienne L. Kaeppler, Betty Lou Kam, Roger G. Rose; copublished with Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco for Excellence in Illustrative or Photographic Books.
– “Hawaii’s Kolea: The Amazing Transpacific Life of the Pacific Golden-Plover” by Oscar W. Johnson and Susan Scott for Excellence in Natural Science.
– “Murder Frames the Scene” by Victoria Nalani Kneubuhl for Excellence in Literature.

Travel book club taking summer break
The Kona Stories travel book club will take a break until October. During the next meeting, currently slated for Oct. 17, the club will discuss “Elephant Complex: Travels in Sri Lanka” by John Gimlette.
