Presentation covers gardening without herbicides

Learn to garden without herbicides on Saturday at the Kailua-Kona Public Library.

“No-Spray Gardening: Alternatives to Herbicides,” a free program, will be presented at 10 a.m. by Melanie Bondera, an organic farmer and gardener for more than 15 years. She will conduct a PowerPoint presentation and also discuss nontoxic ways to control weeds.

The Friends of the Libraries, Kona is sponsoring this Community Seed Library event.

Maona Community Garden holds kickoff event Saturday

Maona Community Garden Ohana Gardening and Sustainability Event Series kicks off Saturday in South Kona.

From 9 a.m.-2 p.m., the event will offer families the chance to learn about growing their own food, eating healthier and conserving natural resources. Hands-on activities include how to make raised garden beds, flowerpot planting and seed planting, making smoothies and more. There will also be resource booths from The Food Basket, Queen Liliuokalani Trust and Kamehameha Schools.

The first 30 participants to RSVP to maonacommunitygarden@gmail.com will receive a free lunch and smoothie ticket.

The event will be held at the garden locared at 84-5097 Keala O Keawe Road in Captain Cook. It is sponsored by the Queen Liliuokalani Trust in partnership with University of Hawaii Sea Grant College Program, The Kohala Center and Na Maka O Papahanaumokuakea.

Senior ID cards to be issued

The Coordinated Services for the Elderly Program of the Elderly Activities Division will issue senior ID cards for those 60 and older at various West Hawaii sites during August.

Aug. 1: 10-1 p.m. at Kona K-Mart in Kailua-Kona

Aug. 2: 1-3 p.m. at Hale Hauoli Senior Center in Honokaa

Aug. 3: 9-11 a.m. at L. Yoshimatsu Senior Center in Waimea

Aug. 8: 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at Kona K-Mart in Kailua-Kona

Aug. 14: 9-11 a.m. at St. Jude’s Church in Hawaiian Ocean View Estates

Aug. 14: 10 a.m.-noon at Kohala CSE “Old Bank of Hawaii building” in Kapaau

Aug. 23: 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at West Hawaii Civic Center, Building B, in Kailua-Kona
