Mahaiula cleanup, restoration work planned Saturday

Volunteers are invited to take part in a beach cleanup and restoration work on Saturday at the Mahaiula section of Kekaha Kai State Park.

The restoration project involves removing nonnative plant and fish species, built-up sediment and sand deposited during the 2011 tsunami in a portion of the large pool/fishpond located at Kaelehuluhulu Beach.

The project is funded via a $10,000 grant from the Hawaii Tourism Authority’s Natural Resources Program administered by the Hawaii Community Foundation. Some of the funds will be used to develop educational materials related to the anchialine pools.

Future community work days will be scheduled.

Registration is from 7:30 to 8 a.m. at the Mahaiula section of the park, followed by morning beach yoga until 9. Anchialine pool restoration work is scheduled from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. followed by a break for a potluck lunch. The beach cleanup will run from 12:30 to 3 p.m.

Attendees are asked to bring a lunch to share and to wear appropriate clothing. All are welcome.
