KAILUA-KONA — A man apparently drowned Saturday while swimming in waters off Hilo.

Responding to the 3:46 p.m. report, fire rescue personnel arrived at the area, located just offshore of Liliuokalani and Coconut parks, to find a person performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the man.

According to a Hawaii Fire Department media release, the person had noticed the man floating face down in the water, but initially thought it was a snorkeler, until reliazing it was a body bobbing in the water. They subsequently waded out to the man, pulled him onto the rocks and began CPR.

When rescue personnel arrived, they took over resuscitation efforts and transported the man to Hilo Medical Center in critical condition. He later died.
