Big Island golfers get scholarships

Four Hawaii State Junior Golf Association members will benefit from $12,500 in scholarships when they head to college in the fall.

Recipients of the C. Pardee and Betsy Erdman college scholarships are Hilo’s Trevor Hirata, who will be a sophomore on the University of Hawaii team, Kailua-Kona’s Matthew Rosato (Pepperdine) and Cole Shintaku (Santa Clara).

Hirata, Rosato and Hilo’s Kalai Pomroy (UNLV) received the Thos Rohr college scholarship. Hirata, Pomroy, Rosato and Shintaku also earned HSJGA college scholarships.

The Erdman scholarship are given to juniors who “exemplify some or all of the qualities and characteristics modeled by the Erdmans,” who are longtime HSJGA supporters.

Rohr’s scholarship is sponsored by Waikoloa Land Company, where Rohr was president. He was also the recipient of the 2007 distinguished service award, given by the Aloha Section PGA. His annual awards are for Hawaii Island residents.

Hawaii Cycling Club’s Sea-to-Stars race

Hawaii Cycling Club, along with Bike Works, is once again hosting the 48-mile, 9,800 foot elevation climb, Sea-to-Stars bicycle race on Aug. 5. Sign-in is at 7 a.m. and the race will start at 8 a.m.

Cyclists may sign up at usacycling.com for a $95 fee. Discounts are available for HCC members, students, and the military. The field will be limited to 50 riders.

Registration will be done online only, and will end on Aug. 1. There will be no registration on the day of the race.

Kona Country Club Jr Golf Program

Kona Country Club will host a junior Golf Program starting on Aug. 6. Registration begins at 3:30 p.m. and the class starts at 4 p.m.

A registration fee of $25 per child will be for 6-10 classes and includes a cap and shirt.

The classes are open to kids 7-17 years old. Each child must have covered shoes and bring a bottle of water.

Classes will be an introduction to golf and learning about safety, honesty and integrity on and off the course.

Big Island Running Company hosts meeting for Ragnar Hawaii

Big Island Running Company will host an information meeting on Ragnar Hawaii on Thursday, Aug. 10 at 5 p.m. at their Alii Drive store.

Ragnar Hawaii is a 12-person relay taking place on Nov. 4-5 from Hilo to Hapuna Beach. Ragnar ambassadors will be at the Alii Drive store to answer questions about the event and discuss the 8-week training program also offered by Big Island Running Company.

The Ragnar training program will start on Tuesday, Sept. 5 at the Alii Drive store.

Habitat for Humanity golf tournament

Habitat for Humanity will host a Birdies for Builds summer golf scramble on Saturday, Aug. 12 at Kona Country Club. The tournament will help raise money for Habitat for Humanity’s Blitz Build event in September, which will build 10 new homes for West Hawaii families.

The tournament is 2-person scramble and will feature contests, prizes and an awards ceremony. Entry fee is $130 for individuals and $250 for a team. Sponsorship opportunities are also available. Players can register by visiting habitwesthawaii.org/events.

HIBT looking for volunteers

The Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament is looking for volunteers to help with this year’s tournament. Volunteers are needed Sept. 7-17 for a variety of tournament support including Kailua pier operations, pre and post-tournament set up and breakdown, headquarter administration, security and a whole lot more.

Interested volunteers should plan to attend the HIBT Volunteer Orientation on Monday, Aug. 14 at 5:30 p.m. at Ocean Seafood Restaurant, located in the King Kamehameha Mall on Kuakini Hwy.

HIBT event headquarters, retail and tournament control will once again be anchored at Courtyard Marriott King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel, located adjacent to Kailua Pier. The 58th annual HIBT runs Sept. 9-17.

Waimea Athletics accepting Biddy Basketball registration

Waimea Athletics is currently accepting registration for Biddy Basketball until Aug. 18 for kids ages 5/6 and 7/8. Fee is $30 per person and includes full sublimation uniform set, electronic league photo and team equipment.

Learn to racewalk

Free racewalking clinics will be held at Old Airport Park’s Makaeo Walking Path on Aug. 12, Sept. 9 and Oct. 7 at 9 a.m. The lessons are provided by Stan Chraminski. For more information email stanski@twc.com.

Hawaii Triple Crown of BJJ

The Kona Open, the seventh leg of the Hawaii Triple Crown of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu will talke place Saturday, Aug. 19 at Kealakehe High School.

Kukio Blue Water Swim

The 12th annual Kukio Blue Water Swim will be held at 8 a.m. on Sept. 23 at Kua Bay. A light breakfast and an awards ceremony will follow the 1.2-mile race from Kua to Uluweuweu Bay at Kukio.
