Hani DeMello of Te ‘E ‘A O Te Turama, a group from Kona performing during the Junior Division Dance Off Saturday at the opening day of the Heiva I Kauai, showcases a Polynesian dance.

The gathering features crafts and culture at the Kapaa Beach Park on the east side of the Garden Isle.

DeMello advanced to the Junior Division Dance Off by getting top honors in the vahine 4-6 class over Anai Caceaes and Galilea Mercado.

Other members of the group placing in the Junior Division dance include Waipua Tavares getting second place in the tane 7-9 class, Naia Ho and Paris Ramos nailing second and third place, respectively, in the vahine 10-12 class.

Members perform as a group today in drumming, otea, aparima and ahupurotu.
